Gamla apoteket, Visby

Gamla apoteket is a medieval stone structure in Visby located at the intersection of Strandgatan and Lybska Grand with a distinctive stepped gable facade. The building now functions as residential apartments and commercial space managed by the local housing company.

The structure was built around 1290 as a merchant's house and served this purpose for centuries. From the late 1700s it operated as a pharmacy before operations eventually relocated in the 1800s.

The building displays the characteristic craft of medieval Visby through its pointed arch windows and decorative brick framing that shape the streetscape today. Visitors notice how such structures defined the appearance of this merchant city and how they remain integral to its visual identity.

The building is centrally located in old Visby and easily reached on foot from main attractions. The facade is clearly visible from the street and offers a good viewing point for observing the medieval architecture.

The structure preserves its original western stepped gable and is one of the oldest continuously used rental buildings in Sweden. This long history of habitation makes it a living example of how medieval structures can remain in everyday use.
