Jönköping castle and fortifications, Medieval castle ruins in Jönköping, Sweden.
The fortification complex covered 10 hectares of land with a system of bastions, earth walls, and round corner towers near Lake Munksjön.
Originally established as a monastery in 1283, the structure was transformed into a castle during the mid-1500s under Gustav Vasa's directive.
Archaeological excavations initiated in the 1970s have uncovered sections of castle walls, providing insights into Swedish medieval military architecture.
The remains of the castle are accessible through Bastionsparken, which features reconstructed defensive walls and a preserved moat system.
The fortress maintained two southern bastions, named Gustavus and Carolus, which were completed before a devastating city fire in 1612.
