Oscarsborg, Söderhamn

Oscarsborg is a brick and plaster observation tower standing on Östra Berget that rises 23 meters into the air. From the top, you can see across Söderhamn Municipality and the surrounding landscape.

The tower was designed by engineer Gustaf Hultquist and opened in 1895 after the community raised money through folk festivals in 1893 and 1894. This project shows how local people came together in the late 1800s to make a structure happen.

The tower grew from a community movement where local people worked together to build something that would last. The Söderhamns Sångförening played a central role in bringing this shared vision to life.

The best time to visit is between June and September when the tower is open. It is worth checking at the entrance or in advance about the exact schedule, since visiting hours are limited.

The local people deliberately chose brick and plaster instead of wood when building this structure, showing their commitment to creating something that would endure. This choice of materials reveals how seriously the community took this project.
