Ramsåsa Church, Medieval church in Ramsåsa, Sweden.
Ramsåsa Church is a medieval church in Tomelilla Municipality built around 1200 with a nave, chancel, apse, and tower that has distinct proportions from the main structure. The building stands in rural farmland surrounded by the surrounding countryside.
The church was built around 1200 and underwent major renovation between 1852 and 1853 under architect Carl Georg Brunius. Additional restoration work took place from 1958 to 1961.
The north wall displays murals from the 1300s showing Saint Christopher and the Wheel of Fortune, artworks that remain uncommon in medieval Nordic churches. These paintings reveal how people of that era understood religious stories through visual form.
The church is accessible to visitors and situated in a rural area reached on foot or by car. Regular services are held, so checking opening times beforehand helps plan a visit.
The apse contains a Romanesque mural of Christ in Majesty within a square mandorla, an uncommon artistic choice for its era. This squared shape differs from the rounded mandorlas typically seen in medieval art of the period.
