Trafik, Working life museum and listed historical ship in Hjo, Sweden.
S/S Trafik is a steel-hulled vessel approximately 31 meters long and just under 6 meters wide that functions today as a working life museum and protected historical ship in Hjo. It retains its original steam propulsion system and interior fittings that demonstrate its former role carrying passengers.
The vessel was built in 1892 and long served as a vital transportation link between Hjo and Hästholmen on Lake Vättern. Regular service ended in 1959, but dedicated supporters purchased and restored the ship in 1972 to preserve it for the future.
The vessel takes its name from the Swedish word for traffic, reflecting its original role as a transport link across the lake. Visitors can explore the engine rooms and passenger spaces that show how people once traveled between shoreline communities.
The vessel operates during summer months from June to August for day trips to various shoreline locations with capacity for around 150 people. It helps to check departure times in advance and bring appropriate clothing for water and weather conditions.
The vessel was awarded Working Life Museum of the Year in 2013, a rare recognition for its preservation and educational mission. This honor reflects how well the original steam system and engine equipment have remained fully functional to the present day.
