Risveden, Nature reserve in western Sweden
Risveden is a nature reserve in western Sweden combining expansive forest, lakes, and wetland areas across rolling terrain. The site brings together coniferous woodland, water features, and boggy zones that create a diverse landscape for walking and exploring.
The reserve was established in 1986 to protect a landscape that had supported human activity for centuries. Boundary markers and the remains of a 1850s farmstead reveal how people once lived and worked within these woods.
The forest serves as a natural observatory for rare bird species, including nightjars, black grouse, and ospreys that frequent the lakes for fishing.
The reserve features clearly marked trails linking multiple protected areas, with shelters and rest points distributed throughout. Fire pits are set aside near the largest lake, making the area welcoming for overnight visitors and day hikers alike.
An abandoned millstone in the northwest reveals an unsuccessful attempt to build a mill in this remote forest area generations ago. The Salstenen boulder, a substantial glacial rock formation, often goes unnoticed by visitors despite being a striking geological feature of the site.
