Turjak Castle, Medieval castle in Velike Lašče, Slovenia
Turjak Castle is a triangular fortress in Velike Lasce whose structure joins three defensive towers with residential buildings. The layout displays architectural elements from different periods as the structure was repeatedly renovated and expanded over the centuries.
The Auersperg family built the original fortress in the mid-11th century at this location, though the structure visible today dates to the early 13th century. The building was repeatedly transformed afterward and served different purposes as it adapted to changing times.
The castle served as a refuge for religious scholars who worked on translating sacred texts into the local language during the Protestant movement. Visitors can walk through spaces where this important intellectual work took place.
A visit is possible on slopes of a wooded hillside where paths lead to the site. Sturdy footwear is advisable as the ground can be uneven and the surroundings remain in a natural state.
The name comes from the Slovene word 'tur' meaning aurochs, a large extinct wild cattle that once lived in the region's forests. The connection between the castle and this prehistoric creature shows how the place is rooted in the landscape.
