Soča, Mountain village in Bovec municipality, Slovenia
Soča is a mountain settlement in Bovec municipality that spreads across the upper Isonzo River valley at about 491 meters elevation. The area is surrounded by the Julian Alps and consists of several smaller hamlets scattered across the terrain.
The area experienced multiple border shifts and administrative changes during the 20th century, first under Austro-Hungarian rule, then under Italian control from 1920. After World War II it became part of Yugoslavia in 1947 and then part of Slovenia in 1991.
The settlement sits along the upper valley of the Isonzo River and is made up of several small hamlets that maintain traditional alpine ways of life. The houses are built into the hillside and blend with the natural mountain landscape.
The area is best reached on foot or by car and offers minimal infrastructure such as shops or restaurants on-site. Visitors should bring their supplies and equipment from larger towns since the settlement is quite remote.
The area marks the source of the Isonzo River, which flows from here through Italy and eventually reaches the Gulf of Venice. This spring area is one of the region's greatest treasures and rarely visited by tourists.
