Potok Cave, Archaeological cave site in Solčava Municipality, Slovenia.
Potok Cave is a limestone cavern that extends deep into the mountain with multiple chambers of varying widths. The entrance opens to the landscape while the interior sits nestled within rock walls.
The cave was systematically excavated around 100 years ago and revealed traces of people and animals from the Stone Age. These findings helped scientists understand how life existed in this region many thousands of years ago.
The cave served as a shelter for humans and animals across many millennia. Today visitors can see stone tools and bones at the Rinka Centre that show how our ancestors lived here.
The cave is reached via marked hiking trails on Mount Olševa, which can be steep and require sturdy footwear. The paths are generally easiest to walk during spring through fall.
Thousands of fossil bear bones were excavated here, making the cave one of the richest sites for these now-extinct animals. Visitors can imagine how bears and people shared the same space across generations.
