Školjčna sipina, Shell bank in Polje Bay, Slovenia.
Školjčna sipina is a shell bank in Polje Bay, extending between Koper and Ankaran along the Adriatic coastline. The formation consists of layers of calcareous shells from mollusks accumulated along the shore.
The bank formed after 1990 when dredging operations at Koper Port stirred up the seafloor. As the displaced sediment washed away, the mollusk shells underneath were gradually exposed.
This place draws people interested in understanding how human activity shapes coastal environments, offering direct observation of industry and nature working side by side. Visitors can see how the landscape continues to change through both natural forces and human influence.
The beach is accessible year-round and provides good conditions for birdwatching and nature photography. Visitors should wear appropriate footwear since the shell surface can be uneven and sometimes sharp in places.
This is the only shell bank in Slovenia, located right near the Rižana River mouth and Koper Port. The formation emerged unexpectedly as a side effect of industrial activity at the coast.
