Vipava Castle

Vipava Castle ruins sit on a steep hilltop with thick stone walls arranged in a rectangular layout that includes two residential structures and a defensive tower. The remains reveal the typical design of a medieval fortification from this region.

First documented in 1275 as Castrum Wipaci superioris, it served as a residence for the Knights of Vipava until the mid-14th century. Later, ownership passed among several noble families until the Lanthieri counts abandoned it to build a new palace in the valley below.

The castle reflects regional medieval building traditions with Romanesque details and commands views of the Upper Vipava valley from its hilltop setting. Its position shaped how people controlled and organized the surrounding area for centuries.

The site is reachable by a roughly 30-minute walk from the town of Vipava, following marked trails up the hillside. The grounds are open to visitors, though the climb requires moderate fitness and involves an unpaved path.

The name references its position in the upper Vipava valley, revealing how geography shaped medieval administrative divisions in the area. This naming system helped distinguish the property from other holdings in the region.
