Gamberk Castle

Gamberk Castle is a fortification ruin perched on elevated terrain in the Zagorje ob Savi region, where stone foundations and wall remnants remain visible. The site contains traces of defensive barriers and gate structures that hint at the scale of its former stronghold.

The stronghold was built in medieval times as a defensive installation and is documented in a copper engraving from 1679. This historical record confirms its existence during an era when such structures secured control over surrounding territories.

The stonework displays medieval building practices and carries family emblems that reveal the power structures of its time. Walking through the ruins, you can sense how such fortifications shaped the valley's identity.

The ruins are reachable via marked hiking paths starting from the nearby village of Ržiše, which serves as a convenient base. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and expect uneven terrain, as the paths traverse hilly landscape.

The ruin sits at an elevated position that provided both protection and sweeping views across the landscape below. This vantage point allowed former inhabitants to monitor movement from a distance and detect intruders well in advance.
