Murska Sobota Castle, Renaissance castle in Murska Sobota, Slovenia
Murska Sobota Castle is a four-sided fortification with corner towers and symmetrically arranged stone window frames on its Renaissance facades. The structure features a gravel-paved inner courtyard that serves as the central gathering space within the walls.
The structure was built on foundations dating to the 13th century and underwent major reconstruction during the 18th century. The Szapary family added Baroque architectural elements and arcaded courtyards during this period of renovation.
The castle houses the Regional Pomurje Museum, which opened in 1956 and shows how people lived and worked in this area over many centuries. The museum displays objects and stories that reflect the region's past through its collections.
The castle houses a multimedia center, youth cultural club, restaurant, and event hall that regularly hosts community activities and performances. Different areas may have varying access depending on events or gatherings scheduled on any given day.
Two Atlas statues support a balustrade balcony at the eastern portal, brought from a demolished palace in Budapest during the 1800s. These sculptures represent an unexpected link between this location and the Hungarian capital.
