Žužemberk Castle, Medieval fortress on a cliff in Žužemberk, Slovenia
Žužemberk Castle is a medieval fortress perched on a cliff overlooking the Krka River valley. Seven round towers line its defensive walls, creating a solid structure that rises above the surrounding landscape.
Construction began under Wilhelm I. around 1000, while major fortification improvements took place under Prince Bishop Christophorus Rauber between 1526 and 1533. These later changes shaped the structure visitors see today.
The inner courtyard serves as an open-air stage during summer months, hosting theatrical productions and musical performances that draw visitors and locals together.
Entry is free, allowing visitors to explore multiple rooms throughout the grounds. Wear comfortable shoes since reaching and walking around the fortress involves some climbing and uneven terrain.
The stone gate of the four-sided tower displays carved numerals dating to 1000, making it one of Slovenia's oldest precisely dated castle structures. This inscription offers a rare window into the fortress's founding era.
