Strečno, Medieval village in Žilina District, Slovakia.
Strečno is a village nestled along the Váh River at 358 meters elevation, surrounded by limestone cliffs of the Malá Fatra Mountains. The river valley here forms a narrow passage between steep rock walls that frame the settlement.
The settlement was first recorded in 1300 and grew around Strečno Castle, built by Matthew III Csák as a strategic fortress to control traffic along the Váh River passage. The stronghold guarded a key route connecting distant regions.
The village keeps medieval traditions alive through Paseka, a reconstructed settlement with five wooden houses showing how craftspeople lived and worked in different periods. The buildings offer a window into the daily lives of earlier generations in this region.
The village is reached by the international E50 road from Žilina, with regular bus service connecting the city and the settlement. Spring through autumn offers the most comfortable conditions for exploring the area on foot along the river valley.
The limestone cliff above the settlement rises 103 meters and holds the castle ruins where the Považské Museum displays exhibitions. The spaces within the castle remain function as gallery rooms, blending history with contemporary presentation.
