St. Michael Chapel, Gothic chapel in Old Town Košice, Slovakia
St. Michael Chapel is a Gothic structure in Košice's Old Town featuring pointed windows with two-light tracery and stepped buttresses that reinforce its walls. A four-sided tower rises from the western side and is integrated into the main body of the building.
The chapel was built between 1380 and 1400 as a cemetery structure and originally housed a mortuary above and an ossuary below to store remains. In 2006 it underwent restoration and was formally converted into an active church building.
The chapel once served Slovak worshippers while the nearby Cathedral of Saint Elisabeth was primarily used by German and Hungarian communities. This separation shaped the religious life of the Old Town for many centuries.
The chapel is located on Hlavná street in the heart of the Old Town and is easy to reach on foot. Visitors should know that it remains an active place of worship, so access times may vary and quiet respect is expected inside.
Inside the chapel above the vestry door hangs one of Europe's oldest municipal coats of arms, dating from 1369. This rare artifact reveals how important Košice was as a trading hub during the Middle Ages.
