Clarissine Church, Gothic church and arts venue in Old Town, Slovakia.
Klarissinnenkirche is a Gothic church in the Old Town of Bratislava, recognizable by its pentagonal tower. Inside, pointed-arch windows and stone ribbed vaults run along the nave, typical of medieval construction from the late 13th century.
Construction started in 1297 when Poor Clares nuns established a convent in Bratislava with royal support. When the convent closed in 1782, the building took on new roles, including serving as a legal academy.
The name refers to the Poor Clares, a Franciscan order of nuns who lived here for several centuries. Today the building hosts concerts and art exhibitions, giving visitors a chance to experience the space in a very different way from its original purpose.
The church sits in the heart of Bratislava's Old Town and is easy to reach on foot from most central landmarks. Since it functions as both a cultural venue and a church, it is worth checking opening hours before you visit.
When the building served as a legal academy after 1782, the composer Béla Bartók received part of his education within these walls. This makes the medieval church one of the few places in Bratislava directly connected to his early years.
