Kysuce, Geographic region in northwestern Slovakia
Kysuce is a region in northwestern Slovakia spanning two districts and characterized by mountain ranges, with Veľká Rača as the highest peak. The main towns are Čadca, Kysucké Nové Mesto, Turzovka, and Krásno nad Kysucou, which form the centers of settlement across this area.
The region was first documented in 1244 when Belos listed properties along the Kysuca and Divinka rivers in an official deed. This early mention shows the area was already inhabited and used economically during the Middle Ages.
The region shows traces of Wallachian settlement from the 16th and 17th centuries in its traditional architecture and local customs that remain visible today. These influences shape how the villages look and how people live here.
The region is best explored from the main towns of Čadca and Kysucké Nové Mesto, which serve as gateways to surrounding villages and natural areas. The mountainous landscape means visitors should expect varying terrain and elevation changes, particularly if planning to hike or walk in the countryside.
The village of Korňa has a natural spring releasing crude oil, an unusual natural phenomenon in this area. Equally notable is the Vojtovský Spring in Čadca, which discharges mineral water mixed with methane gas.
