Nitra Castle, Medieval castle complex in Nitra, Slovakia.

Nitra Castle rises above the city, encompassing St Emmeram's Cathedral and the Bishop's residence within fortified walls and ramparts. The complex contains multiple buildings and interconnected courtyards paved in stone, encircled by high defensive barriers.

Built in the 11th century on the remains of a Celtic settlement, the site served as a strategic outpost during the Great Moravian Empire. The location underwent several reconstructions and eventually became the seat of ecclesiastical power and regional authority.

The cathedral complex sits at the heart of the fortification, where three distinct places of worship stack vertically through the centuries. Visitors walk through these layered spaces and notice how each level reflects the architectural tastes of its era.

The site is open daily with footpaths connecting the various levels, though some passages are steep and paved in stone. Wear comfortable shoes and allow time to explore the multi-level layout without rushing.

The square Vazil's Tower contains a dungeon where Hungarian Prince Vazul was reportedly held captive according to local tradition. This dramatic episode has persisted in regional memory for centuries and draws visitors curious about this darker chapter.
