Krásna Hôrka Castle, Gothic castle in Krásnohorské Podhradie, Slovakia.
Krásna Hôrka is a castle featuring Gothic architecture that rises on a hilltop near Rožňava, distinguished by thick stone walls and multiple defensive towers. The structure commands views of the surrounding mountains and demonstrates how fortress design evolved over time.
The castle was built around 1400 and initially belonged to the Ákos family until transferring to the Mariássy family in 1566, then passing to the Andrássy family in 1578. These successive ownership changes reflected the shifting power structures of the region across generations.
The castle maintains collections of period furniture, weapons, paintings, and bronze cannons that represent centuries of Slovak and Hungarian nobility traditions.
The castle is currently closed for reconstruction following a 2012 fire, so visitors cannot enter the main building. However, the nearby Andrássy Mausoleum and surrounding park grounds remain accessible for exploration.
Inside the castle chapel rests a glass coffin containing the preserved remains of Sophia Andrássy-Serédy, known as the Lady of Krásna Hôrka. This unusual burial draws visitors curious about the personal stories of the noble families who once inhabited the fortress.
