Executioner's Bastion, Medieval defense structure in Košice, Slovakia
The Executioner's Bastion is a semicircular fortification with eight cannon chambers positioned along Stará baštová Street in central Košice. The East Slovak Museum operates the site today, using its interior spaces to display historical firearms and geological specimens across multiple floors.
The fortification was built around 1500 as part of Košice's defensive system. Its design reflects the military needs of that period when such structures protected the city from external threats.
The bastion takes its name from an executioner's house that once stood nearby, reflecting a specific role in the city's past. Today visitors can see how this function shaped the identity of the place and its surroundings.
The site is located on Stará baštová Street in the city center and is easily accessible on foot. Visitors will find multiple floors to explore with different exhibition areas to view during a visit.
Inside the bastion is a reconstruction of Francis II Rákóczi's exile residence from his time in Turkey, accompanied by a bronze sculpture installed in 2006. This unexpected addition connects the fortress to a freedom fighter's life beyond the city.
