Popradská kotlina, Valley formation in Poprad District, Slovakia.
Popradská kotlina is a basin formation in the eastern section of the Podtatranská lowland, bordered by the High Tatras and their foothills to the west. The depression contains several river valleys and flat areas that shape the local terrain.
The basin has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as shown by archaeological discoveries at Gánovce from the Pleistocene epoch. It later developed into an important transportation corridor connecting different regions of Central Europe.
The valley connects multiple regional centers including Svit, Poprad, Kežmarok, Spišská Belá, and Podolínec, each contributing to the local traditions and heritage.
The European road 50 and the Žilina-Košice railway line cross through the basin, making it easy to reach nearby towns and settlements. The transportation network connects multiple communities, so you can explore different areas without difficulty.
Natural mineral and thermal springs bubble up in several locations across the basin, including springs at Starý Smokovec and warmer waters at Gánovce, Vrbov, and Gerlachov. These underground waters have shaped the landscape over millennia and still create areas with distinctive properties.
