Šíp, Mountain summit in Velká Fatra range, Slovakia.
Šíp is a mountain summit in the northern part of the Velká Fatra range, sitting on the boundary between Ružomberok and Dolný Kubín districts. The peak alternates between open grassy ridges and forested slopes that drop away on all sides.
The Velká Fatra range served for centuries as a natural boundary between different territories in northern Slovakia. Seasonal grazing on the high pastures shaped the open ridgelines that are still visible today.
The name Šíp means "arrow" in Slovak, likely referring to the sharp, pointed shape of the ridge as seen from the valleys below. Local hikers from both Ružomberok and Dolný Kubín often use the summit as a meeting point between the two districts.
Marked trails reach the summit from both the Ružomberok and Dolný Kubín sides, so visitors can plan a route that fits their starting point. In winter the slopes can be icy, so proper footwear is worth considering before setting out.
The summit sits exactly on the administrative boundary between two districts, yet there is no marker on the ridge to indicate where one ends and the other begins. This means many walkers cross from one district into another without realizing it.
