Turiec, Tourism region in northwestern Slovakia
Turiec is a tourism region in northwestern Slovakia that spreads across the Turčianska kotlina basin. The area is surrounded by four mountain chains: Malá Fatra, Veľká Fatra, Kremnické vrchy, and Žiar.
This territory was part of the Kingdom of Hungary as Turóc County from the late 11th century until 1920. After World War One, it became incorporated into Czechoslovakia through the Treaty of Trianon.
Martin serves as the regional hub with museums and exhibitions that showcase Slovak artistic traditions. The town is where visitors can encounter local craftsmanship and artistic practices that remain active today.
The region features many marked hiking paths through the Gaderská and Blatnická valleys. These trails connect to the main ridges of the surrounding mountains, offering various route options for walkers.
The Turiec River forms the central backbone of the valley and shapes its landscape. Scattered throughout the region are several natural mineral springs such as Fatra and Budiš that emerge from underground sources.
