Cień Księżyca, Natural cave in High Tatras, Slovakia.
Cień Księżyca is a cave system within the Široká massif in the High Tatras, characterized by a network of underground passages and chambers. The cave contains several large halls with high ceilings that create spacious underground areas.
The cave was discovered in 2004 when speleologists found a small opening in the Hiroká massif. This discovery led to explorations that revealed a major underground system.
The spelunking community designated this location as the longest cave system in the Tatra Mountains, surpassing all previous documented cave networks.
The cave is very cold and wet, requiring warm clothing and sturdy footwear for any visit. Conditions remain stable throughout the year, so the best time to visit is when upper mountain trails are accessible.
A major rockfall deep within the cave destroyed earlier exploration camps and their equipment. This made the cave an important study site for speleology and underground geology.
