Breznica Castle, Medieval castle ruin in Tekovská Breznica, Slovakia.
Breznica Castle is a stone ruin situated on Hrádok hill above Tekovská Breznica. The site overlooks routes through the Hron Valley and provided vantage points over surrounding medieval settlements.
The Archbishop of Esztergom built the castle in the 13th century to secure the region. Matthäus Csák seized control after a siege in 1311, marking a shift in local power.
The ruins display medieval building methods, with thick stone walls arranged to defend the hilltop location. Its position made it a key point for controlling movement through the valley below.
A marked hiking trail from Tekovská Breznica village leads up to the ruins through forest and open terrain. Wear sturdy footwear since the path becomes uneven in places and can be slippery after rain.
The ruins occupied a position where three strategically important places could be watched: the Slovak Gate passage, Hronský Beňadik Abbey, and the mining town of Nová Baňa. This view made the location exceptionally valuable for regional control.
