Dukla battlefield and memorials in Dukla and Svidník

The memorial complex spans both locations and combines a tall stone monument with a military cemetery and informational tablets. The open-air museum displays World War II equipment and weaponry along the road, while preserved trenches and bunkers can be explored in the surrounding forests.

In autumn 1944, one of World War II's bloodiest operations took place here as Soviet and Czechoslovak forces fought in mountainous terrain. This battle permanently shaped the region's approach to remembrance and led to the creation of this memorial complex.

The bronze statue at the center depicts a mourning figure that visitors experience as an expression of shared memory about wartime losses. It serves as an emotional focal point for those reflecting on this region's past.

The site is open year-round and works best for visiting during warmer months when forest trails are easiest to navigate. Most visitors need a few hours to explore the various locations and the museum displays.

An observation tower offers wide views across the border region between Slovakia and Poland. A special area near Kapišová called Death Valley still shows traces of tank battles from that period.
