Calvary Hill in Nitra, Religious heritage site in Nitra, Slovakia.
Calvary Hill in Nitra is a pilgrimage site in Nitra, Slovakia, made up of a series of Neo-Romanesque chapels arranged along a path that climbs the hill. At the top, three crosses mark the summit, and the site also includes the Chapel of the Holy Sepulcher, housed within a former guard tower.
The site grew between the 18th and 19th centuries on land that had previously held a guard tower belonging to Nitra Castle. When that tower was converted into the Chapel of the Holy Sepulcher, it set the foundation for everything that followed on the hill.
The chapels along the path display reliefs from the Passion story, and visitors follow the route from the bottom to the top, stopping at each one. The site draws both those who come for prayer and those who simply enjoy the walk up the hill.
The hill is reached on foot along a marked path, and the climb does not require special preparation for most visitors. At the top, a telescope lets you take in the view over the city and the hills around it.
Nitra is built across seven hills, and this calvary stands on one of them, a detail that locals sometimes compare to Rome or Lisbon. That geographic setting makes the hill a natural reference point when looking at the city from a distance.
