Val obrů

Val obrů, Ancient rampart in Štiavnica Mountains, Slovakia

Val obrů is an earthen rampart that extends across several dozen kilometers through mountainous terrain, constructed from piled earth reinforced with stones in many sections. The structure runs partly along river banks and still displays clear elevation in its preserved areas.

Written records from the 13th century first mention this structure under the name Fossa Giganteum and describe it as a massive earthwork. The exact reasons for its construction and its true age remain subjects of scholarly debate.

Local people call the structure after an ancient legend about giants living in the mountains. This story shapes how visitors and residents understand the earthen walls and imagine their origins.

The best preserved sections are near Pečenice village, where visitors can clearly see and examine the structure. Sturdy footwear is recommended, and it is wise to plan the walk according to the season, as the terrain is hilly.

Archaeological finds near the structure revealed human remains of people with unusually large stature for their time. This discovery reinforced local legends about giants and adds a distinctive archaeological interest to the site.
