Kalvárie

Kalvarie is a pilgrimage complex situated on a hilltop near Banská Bystrica with several stone chapels and stations positioned along a defined path. The site consists of multiple small buildings connected by walkways that guide visitors through the devotional route.

Local people built this site in the early 18th century as a devotional place, constructing multiple chapels and prayer spaces over time. The location developed into an established pilgrimage destination that continues to draw the faithful from the surrounding region.

Pilgrims and local residents gather here especially during Easter to walk the stations while saying prayers in the small chapels. The site continues to be a place where people practice their faith through movement and reflection along the path.

The site is open from sunrise to sunset for visitors to explore at their own pace without requiring a guide. Maps are available at the entrance to help you navigate through all the chapels and stations along the path.

The chapels house traditional Slovak artwork depicting biblical stories through the artistic lens of the 18th century. These pieces reveal how local believers expressed their faith through regional artistic traditions of that time.
