Kolda Region, Administrative region in southern Senegal.
Kolda Region is an administrative area in southern Senegal that stretches across three departments and borders Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, and The Gambia. The Casamance River defines much of its geography, with agriculture and livestock raising as the main economic activities.
The area was once called Haute Casamance and developed from settlements founded by Koly Dado in pre-colonial times. These early communities shaped how the region grew and organized itself in later years.
The Fulani people form the main community here and shape daily life through their customs and language. Alongside them live Mandinka and Jola groups, each keeping their own traditions and ways of speaking that add to the region's character.
National Road 6 links the region to Dakar and other major cities, making travel between areas straightforward. Visitors should expect rural conditions and plan visits during the dry season when roads are more accessible.
The region is known for active cotton farming, which remains an important part of its economy. Specialized dairy farms here produce milk products that supply southern communities throughout the area.
