Akon City, Planned community in M'bour Department, Senegal
The project outlines an urban area with housing blocks, office complexes, and leisure facilities along the Atlantic coast south of Dakar. The total footprint spans roughly two thousand acres (approximately eight hundred hectares) and is expected to include separate zones for technology, healthcare, and retail.
The foundation for the venture was laid in two thousand nineteen, after the Senegalese-born musician Akon announced the idea two years earlier. The first architectural designs were presented to the public in September two thousand twenty.
The design incorporates elements of Senegalese architecture and traditions while promoting technological advancement through smart city infrastructure and digital connectivity.
Construction work currently focuses on road networks and basic utilities. Visitors should note that the site remains largely a work zone and no public tours or general access areas are available yet.
The development intends to run on renewable sources such as solar panels and wind power for all electricity needs. Additionally, the project plans to introduce and test its own digital currency called Akoin for on-site payments.
