Paramaribo Zoo, Zoo in Rainville, Paramaribo, Suriname.
Paramaribo Zoo is a facility in Rainville that houses native Surinamese animals such as spider monkeys, caymans, jaguars, snakes, vultures, and scarlet ibises. The grounds feature two monkey islands, educational areas, and a water park for children.
The zoo began in 1972 as a public facility, evolving from a private garden collection that had started accumulating lions in the early 1960s. This personal project of the prime minister at the time became the foundation for the institution that exists today.
The zoo cares for animals confiscated by authorities or rescued from injuries in the wild. It serves as a place where visitors learn about and connect with native species found across the country.
The grounds are easy to navigate with clear zones for different animal groups and activities. It helps to visit in early morning or late afternoon when animals are more active and the heat is less intense.
About three quarters of the animals come from the region and represent the actual diversity of local wildlife. This makes a visit a genuine encounter with the species that actually live in the landscape around Paramaribo.
