Para District

Para District covers 5,393 square kilometers of land with a mixture of dense rainforest, savannas, and numerous waterways connecting local communities.

The northern section of Para District contains agricultural settlements dating back to the 17th century, when sugar and tobacco plantations were established along the Suriname River.

The district includes settlements of Carib and Arawak indigenous peoples, who maintain their traditional practices alongside modern mining and forestry operations.

The Indira Gandhiweg road connects the district capital Onverwacht to Paramaribo, with regular transportation services running between these population centers.

The district houses the remains of Jodensavanne, a 17th-century Jewish settlement that later became an internment camp during World War II.
