Al-Jdayde

Al-Jdayde is a Christian quarter within Aleppo's old city featuring narrow winding streets lined with ornately decorated mansions and religious buildings. The area contains Armenian churches, Orthodox chapels, and commercial structures from different centuries arranged in close proximity.

Christian residents established this quarter outside the original city walls following Timur's invasion around 1400. It gradually developed into a significant residential and commercial center that remained vital for several centuries.

The district expresses its Christian identity through numerous churches and chapels scattered among homes and shops. Visitors can see this heritage reflected in inscriptions on buildings and the way the streets organize themselves around these places of worship.

The streets are tight and navigation takes patience, but this narrow layout is part of the authentic experience. Wear comfortable shoes and allow time to move slowly through the alleys while noticing architectural details on the buildings.

Two Muslim endowments in the 16th and 17th centuries funded social services within this predominantly Christian quarter. This cooperation between different religious communities reveals how residents of different faiths worked together for the common good.
