Al-Hawl is an administrative center in Al-Hasakah Governorate, located at about 450 meters in elevation and positioned at an important road junction between the provincial capital and the Iraqi border. The town manages 22 municipalities within its subdistrict and serves as the local administrative hub for this wide area.
In November 2015, the Syrian Democratic Forces took control of the town from Islamic State forces during Syrian Civil War operations. This shift in control marked an important turning point in the region's administration.
