Diban, Village in Thiban Subdistrict, Syria.
Diban is a village in eastern Syria that stretches along the eastern bank of the Euphrates River, about 17 kilometers south of Deir ez-Zor. The settlement sits on flat terrain where the river cuts through dry land and small agricultural plots line the waterside.
Tell Diban, a mound near the present settlement, shows traces of Iron Age occupation and was used by Assyrian king Tukulti-Ninurta II during his campaigns in 885 BCE. The site served as a military camp close to where the Khabur joins the Euphrates.
The Syrian Democratic Forces gained control of Diban from ISIL in November 2017, marking a shift in the region's power dynamics.
The village follows Eastern European Time, which is normally UTC+2 and shifts to UTC+3 during daylight saving periods. Roads are simple and run along the river course, where you can take in views of the flat banks and adjacent fields.
The site served as a strategic military camp near the confluence of the Khabur and Euphrates rivers during ancient Assyrian campaigns.
