Sayyidah Zaynab Mosque, Islamic shrine and mosque in Sayyidah Zaynab, Syria
Sayyidah Zaynab Mosque is a mausoleum and place of worship in Sayyidah Zaynab, Syria, featuring two tall minarets rising 50 meters (164 feet). Inside, a large prayer hall sits beneath a golden dome with gilded doors, while mirrored decorations line the ceilings and walls.
Construction of the current complex began in 1990, introducing architectural features from Persian Shiite tradition into its design. The site expanded an older burial ground and grew into a major religious center in the Middle East.
The site takes its name from the granddaughter of Prophet Muhammad and functions as a teaching center for Twelver Shia Islam, where scholars from different countries gather. Pilgrims from across the Shia world visit the tomb and participate in religious ceremonies that take place throughout the year.
The main hall can hold more than 1300 worshippers, while surrounding courtyards provide additional space for around 150 people. Visitors should expect large crowds during religious festivals and wear modest clothing appropriate for a religious site.
Inside the burial chamber stands a cage-like structure called Zarih, positioned directly beneath the golden dome. This ornate metal construction encloses the tomb and allows pilgrims to approach in prayer without touching the burial site itself.
