Sa Pathum palace, Royal residence in Pathum Wan District, Bangkok, Thailand
Sa Pathum Palace is a royal residence in Pathum Wan District, Bangkok, Thailand. The facades appear bright and show a connection of traditional Thai formal language with Italian design ideas throughout the building.
Queen Savang Vadhana had the complex built from 1914 onward. Paolo Remidi, an Italian architect, completed the work two years later.
The name refers to a former lotus pond that shaped the grounds before the residence was built. The complex today shows a mix of courtyards, verandas and ornamental gardens that once served as a private retreat for the royal family.
The palace museum opens for visitors between December and March when temperatures are milder. Those visiting the complex should wear modest clothing and plan some time for the museum tour.
In 1950, the royal wedding of King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Sirikit Kitiyakara took place here. The ceremony was led by Queen Savang Vadhana, who lived in the palace until then.
