Ubol Ratana Dam, Hydroelectric power station in Khuean Ubolratana, Thailand
Ubol Ratana Dam is a hydroelectric facility in northeastern Thailand that holds back the Nam Phong River and supplies water for irrigation and power generation. The structure combines traditional turbine technology with modern renewable energy systems to serve both agricultural and energy needs.
The facility was constructed in 1964 and began operation in 1966, making it the first hydroelectric project in the Isan region of northeastern Thailand. This marked an important shift toward local energy development in that part of the country.
The dam received its name from Princess Ubol Ratana, the eldest child of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, through royal permission in 1966.
The site offers viewing areas where you can see the water and surrounding countryside, with the landscape changing across different seasons. Plan to spend time walking around the facility to experience how the structure fits into the natural setting.
Since 2024, a solar array floating on the water surface supplements power generation and a battery system stores energy for use after dark. This combination of water and solar power shows how the facility has adapted to modern renewable energy approaches.
