Phu Wiang National Park

Phu Wiang National Park is a protected area in Khon Kaen Province covering about 325 square kilometers of rugged land with a horseshoe-shaped mountain range. The highest peaks rise to 844 meters and create the dramatic terrain that shapes the region's character.

A uranium prospector found fossilized remains of a 15-meter-long plant-eating sauropod in 1976, leading to the park's creation in 1991. This discovery put the area on the map for scientists studying ancient life in Thailand.

The park's name comes from the surrounding district, and the dinosaur discoveries here have become intertwined with local pride and scientific curiosity. Today, visitors find this prehistoric connection woven into how people speak about and experience the place.

The park is accessible from Khon Kaen city by heading west on Highway 12 and then north on Highway 2038 through Phu Wiang town. Having a vehicle makes it easier to explore the various sites and excavation areas spread across the park.

Researchers have uncovered five new dinosaur species here, including Siamotyrannus, an early relative of the famous Tyrannosaurus Rex. These findings show that the region played an important role in how predator dinosaurs evolved in Asia.
