Udon Thani International Airport is a small international aerodrome with straightforward design in the Mak Khaeng area. The single terminal with two floors is easy to navigate, with arrivals on the ground level and departures upstairs.
The airport was built in the 1950s as a Royal Thai Air Force base. It expanded during the Vietnam War to host American military aircraft before transitioning to civilian passenger service after the 1970s.
The airport reflects the blend of military heritage and modern travel in the region. Visitors still notice traces of the Cold War era in surrounding buildings, while contemporary travelers move through the same space today.
Arrive one and a half to two hours before domestic flights and two to two and a half hours before international departures. Taxis wait outside the terminal, or regular shuttle buses run between the city and the airport.
The runway is shared with a Thai military base, so fighter jets are sometimes visible nearby. This direct presence of the air force reminds visitors of the site's ongoing military use alongside civilian air travel.
