Wat Rong Khun, Buddhist temple in Chiang Rai, Thailand
Wat Rong Khun is a Buddhist structure in Pa O Don Chai, a locality in Chiang Rai Province in northern Thailand. The main building and surrounding pavilions are entirely white and decorated with countless small mirror pieces that scatter light in all directions.
The artist Chalermchai Kositpipat began the reconstruction in 1997 after the original complex from earlier centuries had become dilapidated. The work continues to this day as the design is gradually expanded and additional buildings are added.
The white temple connects Buddhist teachings with contemporary imagery in its interior spaces, where paintings convey spiritual messages through a mix of religious figures and modern symbols. The representations show how traditional values dialogue with today's world, which visitors can see in the wall paintings.
The complex opens daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with admission handled differently for Thai nationals and international guests. The tour leads over a bridge and through several areas that are easily accessible on paved paths.
The interior murals show film characters, spaceships, and landmarks from around the world alongside religious scenes, woven into the spiritual narrative. This mix surprises many visitors who are familiar with classical temple art and encounter a completely different visual language here.
