Takhli Royal Thai Air Force Base, Royal Thai Air Force facility in central Thailand
Takhli Royal Thai Air Force Base is a military installation in Takhli District, Nakhon Sawan Province, about 230 kilometers northwest of Bangkok. The base features extended runways, large hangars, and open spaces where aircraft can move freely.
The base was built in 1955 and gained importance during the Vietnam War when the United States upgraded and used it from 1961 as a key air outpost. It hosted thousands of sorties flying F-105 Thunderchief fighters and other aircraft against targets in North Vietnam and Laos.
Visitors should note that the site is located in a remote area and is not easily reached by public transport. The best option is to rent a car or book a guided tour from Bangkok, which takes about a half day of travel time.
Takhli was the site of secret operations in the late 1950s where small aircraft carried supplies over India to Tibet. The place is kept alive today through online archives maintained by veterans who share photographs and memories of that era.
