Rommaninat Park, Public park in Old Town, Thailand
Rommaninat Park is a public green space built on former prison grounds in central Bangkok, featuring different zones for recreation and exercise. The site includes walking paths, outdoor fitness equipment, planted gardens, and decorative stone fountains spread across the property.
The site originated as Bangkok Special Prison and was converted to a public park in 1992, retaining original prison walls and guard towers as historical remnants. This transformation from a secure detention facility to a recreational space marked a major shift in the location's purpose.
The name Rommaninat means 'Lady who provides shelter' and honors Queen Sirikit's significant birthday celebration. This reflects how the location has transformed into a space where residents and visitors find respite and recreation.
The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset with free entry and no admission fees required to use the grounds. Exercise stations are positioned throughout, and the open layout makes it easy to navigate and find your way around the property.
A museum on the grounds preserves objects and exhibits from the prison era within four restored buildings that were part of the original complex. This collection offers insight into daily life within the former detention facility.
