Pata Zoo, Indoor zoo at Pata Pinklao Department Store, Bangkok, Thailand
Pata Zoo is a zoo occupying two floors inside a department store in the Bang Yi Khan district of Bangkok. Animals ranging from reptiles and nocturnal species to larger mammals are kept in enclosed indoor spaces with no outdoor areas.
Pata Zoo opened in 1983 as part of the Pata Pinklao department store development in Bangkok. It was one of the first urban facilities in Thailand to place a zoo inside a commercial building.
Animal rights advocates in Thailand have brought attention to the living conditions of the animals, particularly focusing on the gorilla Bua Noi.
The Pata Pinklao building sits on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River and can be reached by river boat or bus. Both zoo floors are inside the same building as the department store, so checking the directory at the entrance helps orient your visit.
Bua Noi, a female eastern lowland gorilla who arrived in 1987, is considered the only gorilla living in Thailand. Animal welfare groups have drawn international attention to her situation and have campaigned for years to have her moved to a sanctuary.
