Yupparaj Wittayalai School, school in Si Phum, Thailand
Yupparaj Wittayalai School is a public secondary school in the Si Phum district of Chiang Mai, Thailand. The campus covers a large area in the old city, with several teaching buildings, administrative offices, and open sports grounds.
The school was founded in 1902 under the initiative of the then-ruler of Chiang Mai, making it one of the oldest educational institutions in northern Thailand. Over the course of the 20th century it grew into one of the largest secondary schools in the region.
The school is considered one of the most respected secondary schools in Chiang Mai, drawing students from across the region. On any given day, groups of teenagers in dark red uniforms fill the grounds, giving the campus a distinct local character.
The school sits in the heart of Chiang Mai's old city and is easy to reach on foot or by bicycle from most central guesthouses. As an active educational facility, access to the grounds is generally not open to visitors.
Although the school sits in the middle of the old city, its grounds are large enough to stand out clearly against the surrounding temples and narrow lanes. The name "Yupparaj" means "crown prince" in Thai, a direct reference to the royal patronage under which it was founded.
