Wat Chomphu

Wat Chomphu is a Buddhist temple in Chiang Mai featuring a gilded elephant beside the main chedi and several smaller stupas decorated with tiered umbrellas. Inside the prayer hall, a Buddha image in Chiang Saen style rests on a raised platform surrounded by dark teak columns with red and black lacquer.

The temple traces its origins to the 16th century and was reconstructed in the 1780s following the kingdom's liberation from Burmese rule under King Kawila. This rebuilding marked a period of cultural renewal and the restoration of religious traditions.

The name comes from a tropical fruit once grown in this area. Inside, you will notice hand-carved wooden elements and gilded details that reflect the craftsmanship valued in local religious spaces.

The porch area holds old murals depicting conflict scenes that may represent historical events or local traditions from centuries past. Few visitors notice these paintings during their visit.
