Siriraj Medical Museum, Medical museum at Siriraj Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand
The Siriraj Medical Museum is a medical museum within Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok and covers six areas on pathology, forensic science, Thai medicine history, parasitology, anatomy and prehistoric findings. The collection extends across several floors of the hospital building and displays preserved organs, skeletons, anatomical models and instruments from different eras.
The hospital opened in 1886 and Dr. Aller G. Ellis started collecting organs from patients to support the training of young doctors. This collection formed the foundation for the pathology section, which later expanded to other medical areas.
Traditional healing plants and earlier treatment methods appear in several rooms and show how local practices looked before western medicine arrived. The reconstruction of an old pharmacy contains original vessels and tools that visitors can view up close.
The site sits on the western bank of the Chao Phraya and can be reached by express boat to Siriraj Pier. The rooms are located within the active hospital grounds, so it is advisable to follow signage and respect ongoing operations.
Some of the preserved exhibits date from the earliest years of medical teaching in Thailand and were prepared for students who otherwise had no access to real human tissue. The parasitology collection shows organisms found in the region and helped earlier to better understand tropical diseases.
