Wat Moli Lokkayaram, Buddhist temple in Bangkok, Thailand
Wat Moli Lokkayaram is a registered historic Buddhist temple in the Thonburi district of Bangkok, Thailand, close to Thonburi Market. The compound features traditional Thai wooden buildings with terracotta details and several open courtyards.
King Taksin founded the temple in 1767 as part of the Thonburi Palace complex he built after establishing his capital there. Over the following centuries, the temple changed its name and underwent several rounds of renovation.
The temple is an active center for Pali studies, the ancient language of Buddhist scriptures. Visitors can observe monks going about their daily routines and get a sense of how study and devotion shape life inside the compound.
The temple sits near Thonburi Market and can be reached on foot from the riverside area along the Chao Phraya. Visiting in the morning tends to be quieter, as fewer people pass through the compound at that time of day.
In 2024, a 17-year-old novice monk here became the youngest person in Thailand to pass the Pali 9 examination, the highest level of Buddhist scriptural study in the country. The news brought wide attention to this temple in Thonburi.
